Helpful Tips:

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when downloading:

  • DSL and cable modem speed is about 100-50 KB a second while High-Speed varies between 300-700 KB a second. 
  • There are 1,000 KB in a MB
  • Certain Image file types are good for different things:

 File Types  Pros Cons 
.bmp  Uncompressed for maximum quality  Uncompressed images means bigger file sizes, cannot be used as a desktop backround 
.tiff Nearly .bmp quality with smaller file size  Cannot be used as a desktop backround 
.png Great file size Decent quality, lossy compression makes images lose some quality 
.jpeg Great file size  Decent quality, lossy compression makes images lose some quality, lower quality than .png 
.gif Astounding small file size  Horrible quality: 256 colors VS millions, horrible shading, works only with solid colors

  • MS Paint can convert all the above file types into each other. No need for expensive programs! Just open the image with Paint and save it as a new image. Right under "File Name" in the save window, there is a "Save as type" option with a pulldown menu. Choose the new file type you wish for, find a place to put the new image, and hit "save."
